Spartanburg built a lot of careers on manufacturing, from the textile mills to BMW, and a lot of those careers are now wrapping up. Turning 65 here usually means sorting out employer retiree benefits at the same time you pick a Medicare plan. Most people also want to know one thing first: will my doctors at Spartanburg Regional still be covered?
Mauldin Insurance Group is an independent Medicare agency based in Lexington, SC. We work with Spartanburg County residents by phone and video, comparing plans from more than one carrier, and there's no charge for our help.
The 2027 window is open October 15 through December 7
Plan changes you make now take effect January 1, 2027. Before you decide anything, read the network section of your Annual Notice of Change. In Spartanburg, the question that matters most is whether your plan still includes the hospital and doctors you already use. If it does and nothing else got worse, keeping it may be the right call.
What shapes Medicare decisions in Spartanburg
One big local health system. Spartanburg Regional handles a large share of care in the county, along with Pelham Medical Center in Greer. If your primary care doctor and specialists are in that system, the first test for any Medicare Advantage plan is whether it includes them. Some people also see specialists in Greenville, which adds a second network to check.
Manufacturing retirees with layered benefits. BMW, Milliken, and other large employers in the area may offer retirees coverage or money toward premiums that has to fit with Medicare. Changing plans without checking can mean losing something you can't get back. See retiring from BMW: your Medicare roadmap.
State and college retirees. USC Upstate, Spartanburg Community College, and local school districts mean many retirees here have PEBA coverage. Leaving it for an outside Medicare plan may be permanent, so look before you switch. Here's how PEBA and Medicare work together.
North Carolina is close. In Landrum, Inman, Chesnee, and the northern part of the county, some people see doctors across the state line. A South Carolina Medicare Advantage plan may treat those providers as out of network.
Comparing more than one company's plans
An agent who represents one insurer can only show you that insurer's plans. We work with several, so we can line up Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and Part D options and point out where they differ for you. Enrolling through us costs the same as enrolling on your own.
Questions we help Spartanburg residents answer
→ Does this plan include my Spartanburg Regional doctors, and my Greenville specialists if I have them?
→ How do my BMW, Milliken, PEBA, or other retiree benefits fit with Medicare?
→ Is Medicare Advantage or a Medicare Supplement the better fit for my health and budget?
→ What will my prescriptions cost at my pharmacy under each plan?
→ Do I qualify for Extra Help or a Medicare Savings Program?
Four mistakes we see in Spartanburg County
1. Not checking the hospital first. A low premium means little if the plan doesn't include Spartanburg Regional or the doctors you see there.
2. Overlooking an employer retiree benefit. Some retiree coverage and premium accounts disappear if you enroll in the wrong kind of plan.
3. Forgetting about out-of-state doctors. If you're near the North Carolina line and use doctors there, confirm the plan covers them.
4. Passing on a supplement at 65 and wanting one later. Your first six months on Part B is the only time South Carolina supplement companies must accept you no matter your health. After that, they can ask medical questions and say no.
Working with us
We'll start by getting your doctors, medications, pharmacy, and any retiree or military coverage on the table. Then we'll show you the 2027 plans that make sense and explain the differences in everyday language. We meet by phone or video, and you take whatever time you need to decide.
Frequently Asked Questions: Medicare in Spartanburg, SC
What will an independent Medicare agent in Spartanburg do for me? We gather plans from multiple insurers, test them against your doctors and prescriptions, and handle your enrollment. Once you're covered, we help with claim issues and sit down with you each fall to see whether your plan still fits.
Is your help really free? Yes. Insurers pay agents a commission, so there's no fee to you, and your premium is the same with or without an agent.
When can I change Medicare plans for 2027? The Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7, 2026. Your new plan starts January 1, 2027. Medicare Advantage members also have a one-time switch available January 1 through March 31.
Do Medicare Advantage plans in Spartanburg include Spartanburg Regional? Many do, but not all, and networks can shift from year to year. We confirm your specific hospital and doctors before recommending anything.
Should I choose Medicare Advantage or a Medicare Supplement? Medicare Advantage often costs less each month and adds extras like dental and vision, but it uses a network and copays. A supplement costs more monthly and lets you use any provider in the country that takes Medicare. Your health, budget, and travel habits decide it.
I retired from BMW. What happens to my retiree benefits with Medicare? That depends on the benefits your employer offers retirees. Some coverage works alongside Medicare, and some comes as money for premiums tied to certain kinds of plans. Check before you enroll so you don't lose it.
I'm a retired teacher or state employee. Does PEBA change my Medicare options? Yes. PEBA retiree coverage is built to work with Medicare, and leaving it for another plan may be permanent. Look at how any new plan affects it first.
I live near the North Carolina line. Can I keep my doctors there? It depends on the plan. Some South Carolina Medicare Advantage plans won't cover North Carolina providers except in emergencies. Original Medicare with a supplement works with any provider that accepts Medicare, in any state.
I'm still working at 65. Do I have to sign up for Part B? Not necessarily. Coverage through your current employer or your spouse's may let you wait without a penalty, depending on the employer's size. Confirm it before your 65th birthday.
Is there help with Medicare costs for people on a limited income? Yes. Medicare Savings Programs can pay your Part B premium, Extra Help lowers prescription costs, and people with both Medicare and Healthy Connections Medicaid may qualify for a Dual Special Needs Plan.
Can I trade my Medicare Advantage plan for a supplement later? You can apply, though approval isn't promised. After your first six months on Part B, South Carolina supplement companies can underwrite you. Get approved before canceling your current plan.
Do you meet people in person in Spartanburg? Our Spartanburg clients usually meet with us by phone or video so we can go through plans together on screen. Call us to schedule.
