Sumter is a military town, a retirement town, and a place where a lot of people drive to Columbia when they need a specialist. All three of those things affect which Medicare plan makes sense for you, and most generic Medicare advice ignores them.

Mauldin Insurance Group is an independent Medicare agency based in Lexington, SC. We work with Sumter County residents by phone, by video, and in person at their homes. We compare plans from multiple carriers side by side, and we don't charge you anything for it.

Annual Enrollment runs October 15 through December 7

Any change you make during Annual Enrollment takes effect January 1, 2027. If your Annual Notice of Change showed a higher premium, a new copay, or a drug moving to a more expensive tier, now is the time to compare. If nothing important changed and your plan still fits, we'll tell you that too.

What makes Medicare different in Sumter

Your network has to reach two cities. Many Sumter residents get routine care at Prisma Health Tuomey and local practices, then go to Columbia for cardiology, oncology, orthopedics, or surgery. A Medicare Advantage plan that covers your Sumter doctors may not include the Columbia specialist you'd actually see. We check both ends before we recommend anything.

Shaw Air Force Base shapes a lot of households. Sumter has one of the largest military retiree communities in South Carolina. If you have TRICARE, turning 65 comes with a hard rule: you must enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B to keep TRICARE For Life. Skipping Part B because "TRICARE covers me" is one of the most expensive mistakes we see.

Here's what military retirees must do at 65 to keep TRICARE For Life.

Veterans often need both VA care and Medicare. VA health care and Medicare don't coordinate. If you use the VA but end up in a non-VA emergency room or need care the VA can't schedule quickly, Medicare is what pays. Many veterans keep both on purpose.

Plenty of people qualify for extra help and don't know it. Medicare Savings Programs, Extra Help with drug costs, and plans for people with both Medicare and Healthy Connections Medicaid can save a household hundreds of dollars a month. We screen for these in every conversation.

If you have both Medicare and Medicaid, see what dual-eligible South Carolinians should do now that Healthy Connections Prime has ended.

Why work with an independent agent

A captive agent or a carrier's 800 number can only show you one company's plans. We represent multiple carriers and lay out Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and Part D options side by side. Your premium is the same whether you enroll through us or directly with the company, and our help costs you nothing.

What we help Sumter residents sort out

→ Whether your Sumter doctors and your Columbia specialists are in the same plan's network

→ How TRICARE For Life, VA benefits, or retiree coverage fit with Medicare

→ Medicare Advantage vs. Medicare Supplement, based on your health, budget, and how far you're willing to drive for care

→ Part D drug costs at the pharmacy you actually use

→ Whether you qualify for Extra Help, a Medicare Savings Program, or a Dual Special Needs Plan

→ What changed in your plan for 2027 and whether it still fits

Four mistakes we see in Sumter County

1. Dropping or delaying Part B with TRICARE. TRICARE For Life only works if you have Part B. Without it, you lose TRICARE coverage and may face a late enrollment penalty when you sign up later.

2. Checking only local doctors. A plan can look perfect for your Sumter primary care doctor and leave your Columbia cardiologist out of network.

3. Choosing on premium alone. A $0 premium plan can still cost more over a year than a plan with a premium, once you add up copays, hospital stays, and drug costs.

4. Missing the Medigap window. Your six-month Medigap open enrollment starts when you're 65 and enrolled in Part B. After it closes, switching from Medicare Advantage to a supplement usually means answering health questions, and you can be turned down.

More on that: can you switch from Medicare Advantage to Medigap later?

How a consultation works

We start with your doctors, your prescriptions, your pharmacy, and any other coverage you have, including TRICARE, VA, or retiree benefits. Then we show you the plans that fit and explain the trade-offs in plain English. There's no pressure and no rush.

Frequently Asked Questions: Medicare in Sumter, SC

What does an independent Medicare agent in Sumter do? We compare Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and Part D plans from several insurance companies, help you enroll in the one that fits, and stay with you after enrollment for billing problems, coverage questions, and your yearly review.

Is there a cost to work with your agency? No. Insurance companies pay agents a commission, and your premium is the same whether you use an agent or enroll on your own.

When can I change my Medicare plan for 2027? Annual Enrollment runs October 15 through December 7, 2026, with changes effective January 1, 2027. If you're in a Medicare Advantage plan, you also get one change between January 1 and March 31.

Do military retirees near Shaw AFB need Medicare Part B? Yes. To keep TRICARE For Life after 65, you must have both Part A and Part B. TRICARE For Life then works as secondary coverage after Medicare.

Do I need a Medicare Supplement if I have TRICARE For Life? Usually not. TRICARE For Life already covers most of what a Medicare Supplement would. We can walk through your situation and confirm what makes sense.

I'm a veteran who uses the VA. Should I still enroll in Medicare? Many veterans do. The VA and Medicare don't coordinate, so Medicare is what covers you at non-VA hospitals and doctors. Delaying Part B can also mean a lifelong penalty if you decide to enroll later.

Will a Medicare Advantage plan cover both my Sumter doctors and my Columbia specialists? Some do and some don't. Networks vary by plan, even from the same company. We check every doctor and hospital you use, in Sumter and in Columbia, before recommending a plan.

Is Medicare Advantage or a Medicare Supplement better in Sumter? It depends on your health, budget, and how much care you expect to need. Medicare Advantage often has a low premium and extra benefits, with networks and copays. A Medicare Supplement costs more each month but lets you see any provider in the country that accepts Medicare, with predictable costs.

What help is available for Sumter residents with limited income? Medicare Savings Programs can help pay your Part B premium, and Extra Help lowers prescription costs. If you have both Medicare and Healthy Connections Medicaid, you may qualify for a Dual Special Needs Plan.

I'm still working at 65. Do I need to sign up for Medicare? If you have coverage through your own or your spouse's current employer, you may be able to delay Part B without a penalty. The rules depend on employer size, so it's worth checking before your 65th birthday.

Can I switch from Medicare Advantage to a Medicare Supplement later? You can apply, but outside your initial Medigap open enrollment window, supplement companies in South Carolina can ask health questions and decline you. Check before you drop your current plan.

Do you meet with clients in person in Sumter? Yes. We meet at your home or another convenient spot in Sumter County, or by phone or video if that's easier.

What areas around Sumter do you serve? All of Sumter County, including Sumter, Shaw AFB, Dalzell, Wedgefield, Pinewood, Mayesville, and Rembert, plus Manning, Bishopville, and the Lake Marion area.
