Conway is the county seat and the quieter side of Horry County. It has a riverfront downtown, a university crowd, and growing 55-plus neighborhoods, with Myrtle Beach a short drive east. Many longtime residents have been on Medicare for years. Many newer ones just arrived from out of state. Both groups need a plan that works with Conway Medical Center and the beach hospitals alike.
Mauldin Insurance Group is an independent Medicare agency based in Lexington, SC. We help Conway, Aynor, Loris, and Carolina Forest residents compare plans from several carriers by phone or video, and our help is free.
Changing plans for 2027: October 15 through December 7
Coverage you choose now starts January 1, 2027. Read your Annual Notice of Change and check that Conway Medical Center, your specialists, and your pharmacy are still covered. If everything still fits, you may not need to change a thing.
What matters for Medicare in Conway
Conway Medical Center and the coast. Many people here use Conway Medical Center for everyday hospital care, then see specialists at Grand Strand, McLeod, or Tidelands closer to the beach. Medicare Advantage networks don't always include all of them, so we check the ones you'd actually use.
Newcomers in 55-plus communities. Conway's active-adult neighborhoods have brought in plenty of retirees from other states. If you moved with a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan from somewhere else, it likely doesn't cover you here. Your move opened a special enrollment period, and it ends.
Rural western Horry County. In Aynor, Loris, Galivants Ferry, and the farm country around them, plenty of households qualify for help with Medicare costs and haven't applied. We screen for Medicare Savings Programs, Extra Help, and Dual Special Needs Plans every time.
University and school retirees. Coastal Carolina University, Horry-Georgetown Technical College, and Horry County Schools mean many retirees here have PEBA coverage. It's built to work with Medicare, and leaving it may be permanent. See PEBA and Medicare.
Choosing from more than one company
If you only call one insurer, you'll only see its plans. We work with several carriers, so we can compare Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and Part D for you and lay out the differences in plain terms. Your premium doesn't change.
Ways we help Conway-area residents
→ Checking Conway Medical Center and coastal hospitals against each plan
→ Replacing an out-of-state plan after moving to Horry County
→ Finding help with premiums and drug costs for rural households
→ Fitting PEBA, TRICARE For Life, or VA benefits together with Medicare
→ Comparing prescription prices at your pharmacy
Four mistakes we see in Conway
1. Checking Conway doctors but not the beach specialists. Both have to be covered.
2. Keeping a plan from another state. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are tied to where you live.
3. Not applying for help you qualify for. Medicare Savings Programs and Extra Help often go unclaimed.
4. Missing the supplement window. For your first six months on Part B, South Carolina supplement companies must accept you regardless of health. After that, they can say no.
How we work with you
We'll go over your doctors in Conway and along the coast, your prescriptions, your pharmacy, and any retiree or military coverage. Then we'll walk you through the 2027 plans that fit and what each would likely cost. We do it all by phone or video.
Frequently Asked Questions: Medicare in Conway, SC
What can a Medicare agent in Conway do for me? We compare the plans offered in Horry County from several insurers, check them against your doctors and drugs, and get you enrolled. After that, we help with claims and review your coverage each fall.
Will this cost me anything? No. Insurance companies pay agents, and you pay the same premium either way.
What are the 2027 enrollment dates? October 15 through December 7, 2026. Your new plan starts January 1, 2027. Medicare Advantage members also get one change from January 1 to March 31.
Do Conway Medicare Advantage plans cover Conway Medical Center? Many do, but not every plan, and networks change. We confirm your hospital and doctors first.
My specialist is near the beach. Will a Conway plan cover them? It depends on the plan. Some include the coastal hospitals and specialists and some don't. A Medicare Supplement works with any provider that accepts Medicare.
I moved to a 55-plus community in Conway. Do I need a new plan? If you have Medicare Advantage or Part D from another state, most likely. Your move gives you a special window to choose a South Carolina plan. A Medicare Supplement generally moves with you.
How do I know if I qualify for help with Medicare costs? Medicare Savings Programs and Extra Help are based on income and resources. We'll walk through the basics and help you apply if it looks like you qualify.
I have Medicare and Medicaid. What are my options? You may qualify for a Dual Special Needs Plan, which coordinates both programs and often adds benefits like dental and vision.
I retired from Coastal Carolina or the school district. How does PEBA work? PEBA retiree coverage works with Medicare once you're eligible. Check how any outside plan would affect it before enrolling, since leaving may be permanent.
Is Medicare Advantage or a Medicare Supplement better in Conway? Medicare Advantage often has a low premium with a network and copays. A supplement costs more but lets you see any provider that accepts Medicare. It comes down to your doctors and budget.
I'm still working at 65. Do I need Part B? Possibly not, if you have coverage through your own or your spouse's current employer. Employer size changes the rules, so check before your birthday.
Can I switch from Medicare Advantage to a supplement later? You can apply, but after your first six months on Part B, South Carolina supplement companies can decline you. Get approved first.
