Orangeburg sits right between Columbia and Charleston, about an hour from each. For a lot of people here, that means routine care close to home and specialist care down the interstate in one direction or the other. A Medicare plan has to work for all of it.
Mauldin Insurance Group is an independent Medicare agency based in Lexington, SC, just up I-26. We help Orangeburg County residents compare plans from several carriers by phone or video, and our help is free.
2027 Annual Enrollment: October 15 to December 7
Changes made in this window start January 1, 2027. Look at your Annual Notice of Change for anything that affects your hospital, your specialists, or your drug costs. If none of that moved, your current plan may still be the right one, and we'll say so.
What makes Medicare in Orangeburg County its own thing
Your local hospital is part of a bigger system. The hospital in Orangeburg is now MUSC Health Orangeburg, part of the same system as MUSC in Charleston. That can be helpful when you need a referral to Charleston, but it also means contract disputes between MUSC and an insurer can reach Orangeburg. Read what Orangeburg-area Healthspring members should know about MUSC.
Specialists are often an hour away. Depending on your doctors, you may head to Columbia for some care and Charleston for other care. Before choosing a Medicare Advantage plan, make sure it includes the specific hospitals and specialists you'd use in both cities.
Rural communities and cost help. In Holly Hill, Bowman, Elloree, Branchville, North, and other smaller towns, plenty of people qualify for help paying Medicare costs and don't realize it. We check for Medicare Savings Programs, Extra Help, and Dual Special Needs Plans in every conversation.
State university retirees. Retirees from South Carolina State University, Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College, and local school districts often have PEBA coverage. It's designed to work with Medicare, and dropping it for an outside plan may not be undoable. See PEBA and Medicare.
Why it pays to see several carriers
If you only talk to one insurance company, you only see one company's plans. As an independent agency, we can compare Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and Part D options from several carriers and help you find the one that fits. Your premium is no higher for using us.
Where we help Orangeburg residents
→ Making sure a plan covers MUSC Health Orangeburg and the Columbia or Charleston specialists you see
→ Checking whether you qualify for help with Medicare premiums and drug costs
→ Finding Dual Special Needs Plans for people with Medicare and Healthy Connections Medicaid
→ Fitting PEBA, TRICARE For Life, or VA benefits together with Medicare
→ Comparing prescription costs at the pharmacy closest to you
Four mistakes we see in Orangeburg County
1. Checking only the hometown hospital. If you're likely to be referred to Columbia or Charleston, the plan needs to cover those providers too.
2. Missing out on cost help. Help with Part B premiums and drug costs goes unclaimed all the time.
3. Getting caught off guard by a contract dispute. When a health system and an insurer can't agree, members can lose in-network access. Know where your plan stands each fall.
4. Waiting on a Medicare Supplement. Supplement companies in South Carolina must take you regardless of health only during your first six months on Part B. After that, they can say no.
How we work with you
We'll go over your doctors here and in Columbia or Charleston, your prescriptions, your pharmacy, and whether you may qualify for help with costs. Then we'll explain which 2027 plans fit and why, in plain English. It's all by phone or video, so there's no driving involved.
Frequently Asked Questions: Medicare in Orangeburg, SC
What does a Medicare agent in Orangeburg do? We find the plans available in Orangeburg County, compare them against your doctors and medications, and help you enroll. We stay in the picture afterward for claim problems and your yearly review.
Will I pay anything to work with you? No. We're paid by the insurance companies, and your premium is the same as enrolling on your own.
What are the 2027 enrollment dates? October 15 through December 7, 2026, for coverage starting January 1, 2027. If you're in Medicare Advantage, you can also make one change between January 1 and March 31.
Do Medicare Advantage plans in Orangeburg cover MUSC Health Orangeburg? Many do, but not every plan, and contracts can change. We check your hospital and doctors before recommending anything.
I see specialists in Columbia or Charleston. Can one plan cover both? Often, yes, but you have to check. Some plans include providers in both cities and some don't. A Medicare Supplement works with any provider that accepts Medicare, anywhere.
Can I get help paying for Medicare? You may qualify for a Medicare Savings Program, which can pay your Part B premium, or Extra Help, which lowers drug costs. We can walk through the basics and help you apply.
I have Medicare and Medicaid. What should I know? You may be eligible for a Dual Special Needs Plan, which coordinates both programs and often adds benefits like dental, vision, and an allowance for everyday health items. We'll show you what's offered in Orangeburg County.
Is Medicare Advantage or a Medicare Supplement better for me? Medicare Advantage often has a low premium with network rules and copays. A supplement costs more each month but lets you see any provider that accepts Medicare. Your doctors and budget decide which is better.
I retired from SC State or a school district. How does PEBA fit with Medicare? PEBA retiree coverage is meant to work alongside Medicare. Before joining another plan, make sure you know what happens to your PEBA coverage, because leaving may be permanent.
I'm still working at 65. Can I delay Part B? You may be able to, if you have coverage through your own or your spouse's current employer. How big the employer is affects the rules, so check before you turn 65.
Can I change from Medicare Advantage to a supplement down the road? You can apply, but after your first six months on Part B, South Carolina supplement companies can review your health and turn you down. Get the supplement approved before you cancel.
Do you meet in person in Orangeburg? We usually meet Orangeburg clients by phone or video, which saves you a trip. Call us and we'll find a time.
