Serving Myrtle Beach, Murrells Inlet, North Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach, Conway, and the greater Grand Strand
Few places in America attract more retirees than the Grand Strand. Every year, thousands of people move to Myrtle Beach, Murrells Inlet, and Conway right around retirement age — and a great many of them arrive owing themselves a Medicare decision they did not realize was on the clock. If your 65th birthday is coming up, this guide is for you.
It is written in plain English for your neighbors along the coast, and it is educational only: no plans, no pitch — just the timeline and the rules so you can decide with confidence and plenty of lead time.
The month you turn 65 sets everything
Medicare revolves around your 65th birthday month. Around it, you get a seven-month window — your Initial Enrollment Period — to make your first decisions:
- The three months before your birthday month
- Your birthday month
- The three months after your birthday month
For most people on the Grand Strand, the smart play is to act in those first three months. Signing up before your birthday month is what lets coverage start the very month you turn 65 — no gap. Wait until your birthday month or later, and your start date moves to the following month.
The deadline that follows you for life
This is the part that trips up so many new arrivals. If your seven-month window closes and you have not enrolled — and you are not covered by qualifying employer insurance — you can face a permanent late enrollment penalty added to your monthly premium for as long as you have coverage.
There is a yearly catch-up window (January 1 to March 31), but coverage from that route can start later than you would like. That is exactly why so many people on the coast start looking into their options around five months before their birthday.
New to the Strand? A couple of things matter
The Myrtle Beach area welcomes a steady stream of retirees from the Northeast and Midwest. If that is you, remember two things. First, your Medicare timeline is based on your age, not how long you have lived here — a recent move does not reset the clock. Second, if you are leaving coverage from another state, pin down the exact date it ends, because it affects how your enrollment lines up.
Part-year residents and snowbirds should pay extra attention here, since coverage that works well in one state may behave differently when you spend months at the beach.
Still working at 65? Your rules may be different
Many people around Conway and North Myrtle Beach are still working full-time at 65, sometimes with solid employer coverage. If that describes you, you may be able to delay parts of Medicare without penalty and enroll later through a special window when you retire. The details depend on your employer's size and plan setup — and this is an easy place to make a costly mistake in either direction. Get a clear read on your specific case first.
The building blocks, briefly
- Hospital coverage helps with inpatient stays; most people qualify at no monthly cost thanks to the Medicare taxes they paid while working.
- Medical coverage helps with doctor visits, outpatient care, and preventive services, and carries a monthly cost for most people.
- Beyond the basics, there are different ways to round out your coverage and manage out-of-pocket costs. The right fit depends on your health, your budget, and the doctors and hospitals — Grand Strand, McLeod, Tidelands — you want to keep using along the coast.
A simple countdown for Grand Strand residents
- Six months out: Start learning. Decide whether you will keep working or retire.
- Five to four months out: Understand your options; if you are leaving other coverage, confirm exactly when it ends.
- Three months out: Your enrollment window opens. Acting now is what lets coverage begin the month you turn 65.
- Birthday month and after: Still possible, but your start date moves to the next month.
Talk it through with a local agent — no obligation
Medicare is a federal program, but the decision is personal and local — your doctors, your prescriptions, your budget, your life here on the coast. You should never feel pushed, and you do not have to sort it out alone.
