Chapin calls itself the capital of Lake Murray, and a lot of the people turning 65 here picked it for exactly that reason. Some have been on the water for decades. Others built or bought in the last few years after careers somewhere else. Either way, Chapin retirees tend to have a few Medicare questions in common, and most of them come down to income, travel, and which doctors you'll use.
Mauldin Insurance Group is an independent Medicare agency based in Lexington, SC, a short drive across the lake. We help Chapin and Lake Murray residents compare plans from several carriers, in person or by phone or video, and our help is free.
Annual Enrollment for 2027: October 15 to December 7
Anything you change takes effect January 1, 2027. Your Annual Notice of Change is the place to start. Check that your doctors and hospital are still covered and look at what happened to your drug costs. If both still work for you, there may be no reason to switch.
Medicare questions that come up a lot in Chapin
Income-based surcharges. Higher-income retirees pay more for Part B and Part D through IRMAA, based on their tax return from two years earlier. If you recently retired and your income dropped, you may be able to get that surcharge reduced. See how IRMAA works and how to appeal it.
Doctors in Lexington, Irmo, and Columbia. Many Chapin residents see Lexington Medical Center doctors for primary care and get referred to specialists in Columbia. A Medicare Advantage plan has to cover both, and not every plan does.
Second homes and travel. If you spend part of the year away, visit family often, or keep a place somewhere else, a plan built around local doctors may leave you paying out of pocket while you're gone. That's where a Medicare Supplement or a PPO-style plan can make more sense.
New to the lake, new to South Carolina. If you moved to Chapin from another state with a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan, it probably doesn't work here. Moving opens a special enrollment period, and it doesn't stay open long.
An independent agent on your side
A carrier's call center or a captive agent can only offer one company's plans. We work with several carriers, so we can compare Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and Part D side by side and give you a straight answer about which fits. It doesn't cost you anything extra.
How we help Chapin residents
→ Checking whether IRMAA applies and whether a reduction request makes sense
→ Matching a plan to your Lexington and Columbia doctors
→ Finding coverage that works when you're away from the lake
→ Replacing an out-of-state plan after a move
→ Fitting PEBA, TRICARE For Life, or other retiree coverage together with Medicare
Four mistakes we see in Chapin
1. Paying IRMAA you may not owe. If your income fell when you retired, the surcharge may be based on numbers that no longer apply.
2. Choosing an HMO and then traveling. Routine care away from home may not be covered.
3. Overlooking the Columbia specialist. Your primary care doctor being in network isn't enough.
4. Treating the Medigap window as optional. During your first six months on Part B, South Carolina supplement companies must accept you no matter your health. After that, they don't have to.
What working with us looks like
We'll talk through your doctors, prescriptions, pharmacy, travel habits, and any retiree coverage. Then we'll show you which 2027 plans fit and what you'd likely spend with each. We can meet at your home in Chapin or by phone or video.
Frequently Asked Questions: Medicare in Chapin, SC
What does a Medicare agent in Chapin do for me? We compare the plans offered in your county from several insurers, check them against your doctors and prescriptions, and handle enrollment. Later on, we help with claims and review your coverage with you each fall.
Do I pay you anything? No. The insurance companies pay agents, and your premium is the same either way.
When can I change my Medicare plan for 2027? Between October 15 and December 7, 2026, with coverage starting January 1, 2027. Medicare Advantage members can also make one change between January 1 and March 31.
Why is my Part B premium higher than the standard amount? That's likely IRMAA, an income-based surcharge tied to your tax return from two years ago. If your income dropped because you retired, you can ask Social Security to recalculate it.
I travel a lot. What kind of Medicare plan fits? Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement works with any provider that accepts Medicare, nationwide. Some Medicare Advantage PPO plans also cover care outside the area. We'll compare both for how you actually travel.
Do Chapin plans cover Lexington Medical Center and Columbia specialists? Some include both, and some don't. Networks can change each year, so we check your specific doctors every fall.
I moved to Chapin from out of state. Do I need a new plan? If you have Medicare Advantage or Part D from another state, you'll usually need a South Carolina plan. Your move gives you a special enrollment window. A Medicare Supplement generally moves with you.
Is Medicare Advantage or a Medicare Supplement better in Chapin? Medicare Advantage often has a low premium with a network and copays. A supplement costs more each month but gives you freedom to see any provider that takes Medicare. Many lake retirees who travel lean toward a supplement.
I'm a retired teacher or state employee. How does PEBA work with Medicare? PEBA retiree coverage works alongside Medicare. Check how any outside plan would affect it before enrolling, because leaving may be permanent.
I'm still working at 65. Can I put off Part B? Possibly. If you have coverage through your own or your spouse's current employer, you may be able to delay without a penalty, depending on employer size.
Can I switch to a supplement later? You can apply, but after your first six months on Part B, South Carolina supplement companies can ask health questions and turn you down. Get approved first.
Will you meet with me in Chapin? Yes. We're just across the lake in Lexington and can meet at your home or by phone or video. Call or text to set a time.
