Camden has the oldest-town charm in the state, horse country on the edges, and a steady stream of retirees who discovered it and decided to stay. Kershaw County also sits close enough to Columbia that many people do their routine care at home and their specialist care down I-20. Choosing a Medicare plan here means making sure both halves are covered.

Mauldin Insurance Group is an independent Medicare agency based in Lexington, SC. We help Camden, Lugoff, Elgin, and the rest of Kershaw County compare plans from several carriers, in person or by phone or video, and we don't charge for it.

Your 2027 window is October 15 through December 7

Changes you make now take effect January 1, 2027. The first thing to check in your Annual Notice of Change is whether MUSC Health Kershaw and the Columbia specialists you use are still in network. If they are and your costs held steady, sticking with your plan may be the right call.

What matters for Medicare in Kershaw County

The hospital in Camden is part of MUSC. The former KershawHealth is now MUSC Health Kershaw Medical Center. That connects you to a larger system, but it also means any dispute between MUSC and an insurance company can affect your coverage here. Read what Kershaw County Healthspring members should know about MUSC.

Columbia specialists, a short drive away. Many Kershaw County residents see cardiologists, oncologists, and surgeons at Prisma Health or Lexington Medical Center. A plan that works for your Camden doctor may not include the Columbia specialist you'd be referred to.

Retirees who chose Camden. People move here for the history, the horses, and Lake Wateree. If you came from another state with a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan, it likely won't cover you here, and your move started a special enrollment period that won't last.

Veterans and military retirees. With Fort Jackson and Shaw Air Force Base both nearby, Kershaw County has plenty of military families. TRICARE For Life needs Part A and Part B, and VA care runs separately from Medicare. Here's what military retirees must do at 65.

One conversation, several carriers

If you call one insurance company, you hear about one company's plans. We're independent, so we can show you Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and Part D plans from several carriers side by side. Working with us doesn't raise your premium.

How we help in Camden and Kershaw County

→ Checking that MUSC Health Kershaw and your Columbia specialists are both in network

→ Replacing an out-of-state plan after a move to Camden or Lake Wateree

→ Fitting TRICARE For Life, VA, or PEBA retiree benefits together with Medicare

→ Seeing whether you qualify for help with premiums or prescription costs

→ Comparing drug prices at your pharmacy in Camden or Lugoff

Four mistakes we see in Kershaw County

1. Picking a plan before checking the Columbia side. Your specialist matters as much as your primary care doctor.

2. Not watching for MUSC contract news. When a health system and an insurer can't agree, members can lose in-network access. Check every fall.

3. Keeping an out-of-state plan too long. Your move started a clock. Use your special enrollment period before it runs out.

4. Letting the Medigap window pass without a decision. In your first six months on Part B, South Carolina supplement companies must take you regardless of health. After that, they can decline.

Frequently Asked Questions: Medicare in Camden, SC

How can a Medicare agent in Camden help me? We compare the Kershaw County plans from several insurers against your doctors and drugs, enroll you in the one that fits, and help later with claims, network changes, and your review each fall.

Is there a fee? No. Agents are paid by the insurance companies, and your premium is the same whether or not you use one.

When is the 2027 Annual Enrollment Period? October 15 through December 7, 2026, with new coverage on January 1, 2027. Medicare Advantage members also get a single change from January 1 to March 31.

Do Medicare Advantage plans in Camden cover MUSC Health Kershaw? Many do, but not every plan, and contracts can change. We confirm your hospital and doctors before we recommend anything.

Will a Kershaw County plan cover my specialists in Columbia? Some plans include Columbia providers and some don't. We check each doctor you use. A Medicare Supplement works with any provider in the country that accepts Medicare.

I moved to Camden from another state. What happens to my Medicare plan? A Medicare Advantage or Part D plan from your old state usually won't cover you here. Your move gives you a special enrollment period to pick a South Carolina plan. A Medicare Supplement generally moves with you.

Do military retirees in Kershaw County need Part B? Yes. TRICARE For Life only works if you have both Part A and Part B. It then pays after Medicare.

I use the VA. Should I still have Medicare? Many veterans keep both. The VA and Medicare don't coordinate, so Medicare covers care outside the VA. Delaying Part B can lead to a lifelong penalty.

Is Medicare Advantage or a Medicare Supplement better in Camden? If your doctors are in a plan's network, Medicare Advantage can cost less each month. If you want to see any provider that accepts Medicare without network limits, a supplement is worth the higher premium.

Can I get help paying for Medicare? You may qualify for a Medicare Savings Program, which can cover your Part B premium, or Extra Help with prescriptions. People with both Medicare and Healthy Connections Medicaid may qualify for a Dual Special Needs Plan.

I'm still working at 65. Can I wait on Part B? Possibly. If you have coverage through your own or your spouse's current employer, you may be able to delay without a penalty, depending on employer size. Check before you turn 65.

Can I move to a Medicare Supplement later? You can apply, but after your first six months on Part B, South Carolina supplement companies can ask health questions and turn you down. Have the supplement approved before dropping your current plan.

Do you meet in person in Camden? Yes. We can meet in person in Kershaw County, or by phone or video if that's more convenient. Call and we'll set a time.

What areas around Camden do you serve? All of Kershaw County, including Camden, Lugoff, Elgin, Bethune, Cassatt, and the Lake Wateree area, plus Blythewood, Ridgeway, and the rest of the Midlands.
