Summerville is the Flowertown, but lately it's better known for growth. New neighborhoods keep spreading toward Nexton and Cane Bay, and 55-plus communities like the Del Webb developments there are filling with people who just retired, many from out of state. Throw in Boeing retirees, Joint Base Charleston families, and a commute that ties everyone to Charleston, and Summerville ends up with a Medicare picture all its own.
Mauldin Insurance Group is an independent Medicare agency based in Lexington, SC. We help Summerville, Ladson, Moncks Corner, and Goose Creek residents compare plans from several carriers by phone or video, at no cost.
The 2027 enrollment window: October 15 to December 7
Your choice takes effect January 1, 2027. When your Annual Notice of Change arrives, check whether Summerville Medical Center, Roper St. Francis Berkeley, and your Charleston specialists are still covered. If they are and your costs held steady, you may not need to change.
What shapes Medicare in Summerville
New hospitals, shifting networks. Summerville now has hospital options close to home, including Summerville Medical Center and Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital, plus the bigger Charleston systems down I-26. Medicare Advantage plans don't always cover all of them, and as new facilities open, networks change. Check yours every fall.
Del Webb and other 55-plus newcomers. Many people in Summerville's active-adult communities moved here in the last few years. If you brought a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan from another state, it likely stopped working when you moved. The special enrollment period that followed your move won't stay open.
Boeing retirees. A lot of Boeing South Carolina employees live in Summerville. Retiree benefits, and coverage some workers brought from Washington state, have to be lined up carefully with Medicare. See Boeing South Carolina and Medicare.
Joint Base Charleston families. Military retirees must enroll in Part A and Part B at 65 to keep TRICARE For Life. Here's what military retirees must do at 65.
Why an independent agent
You'll only hear about one company's plans if you call a carrier or a captive agent. We work with several carriers, so we can compare Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and Part D options and explain the differences for you. Our help doesn't add to your premium.
What Summerville residents ask us
→ Does this plan cover Summerville Medical Center and Roper St. Francis Berkeley?
→ Will my Charleston specialists still be in network?
→ I moved into a Del Webb community. What do I do with my old plan?
→ How do my Boeing retiree benefits work with Medicare?
→ What do I need to keep TRICARE For Life?
Four mistakes we see in Summerville
1. Assuming the new hospital nearby is in your network. Proximity doesn't decide coverage.
2. Keeping a plan from your old state. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans don't move with you.
3. Changing coverage before checking Boeing or other retiree benefits. Some can't be restored once dropped.
4. Treating the supplement window as something to do later. In your first six months on Part B, any South Carolina supplement company has to accept you. After that, they can decline.
How a review with us works
We'll find out where you moved from, what coverage you have now, which doctors and hospitals you use, and what you take. Then we'll compare the 2027 plans that fit and explain what each would cost. We do it by phone or video, so there's no fighting I-26 traffic.
Frequently Asked Questions: Medicare in Summerville, SC
What does an independent Medicare agent in Summerville do? We compare the plans available in Dorchester or Berkeley County from several insurers, check them against your doctors and medications, and help you enroll. We stay available for claims help and annual reviews.
What does it cost me? Nothing. The insurance companies pay agents, and your premium is the same as enrolling on your own.
When can I change my plan for 2027? October 15 through December 7, 2026. New coverage starts January 1, 2027. Medicare Advantage members also get one change between January 1 and March 31.
Do Summerville Medicare Advantage plans cover the local hospitals? Many cover Summerville Medical Center and Roper St. Francis Berkeley, but not every plan covers both. We check your hospitals and doctors before recommending a plan.
I moved to a 55-plus community in Summerville. Do I need a new Medicare plan? If you have Medicare Advantage or Part D from another state, almost certainly. Your move gives you a special window to choose a South Carolina plan. A Medicare Supplement usually moves with you.
Does my county matter in Summerville? Yes. Summerville stretches into Dorchester, Berkeley, and Charleston counties, and Medicare Advantage plans are approved county by county. We start with your address.
I'm retiring from Boeing. How does Medicare fit with my benefits? It depends on your retiree benefits. Some coverage works alongside Medicare, and some is tied to certain kinds of plans. Check before enrolling so you don't lose anything.
Do military retirees in Summerville need Part B? Yes. TRICARE For Life only stays in place with both Part A and Part B.
Is Medicare Advantage or a Medicare Supplement better here? Medicare Advantage often has a low premium with a network and copays. A supplement costs more but works with any provider that accepts Medicare. Your doctors, health, and travel plans decide.
I'm still working at 65. Do I need Part B now? Possibly not. Coverage through your own or your spouse's current employer can let you wait without a penalty, depending on employer size.
Can I move from Medicare Advantage to a supplement later? You can apply, but after your first six months on Part B, South Carolina supplement companies can decline you based on health. Get approved before canceling.
Do you meet in person in Summerville? We work with most Summerville clients by phone or video, which lets us go through plans together on screen. Call to schedule.
What areas around Summerville do you serve? Summerville, Nexton, Cane Bay, Knightsville, Ladson, Goose Creek, Moncks Corner, and the rest of the Charleston area.
