Lancaster County is really two places when it comes to Medicare. Up in Indian Land, new neighborhoods and Sun City Carolina Lakes are full of retirees who moved down from the Charlotte area or farther north. Down in Lancaster, Kershaw, and Heath Springs, many families have been here for generations. Both groups end up asking the same question: which doctors and hospitals will my plan actually cover?

Mauldin Insurance Group is an independent Medicare agency based in Lexington, SC. We help Lancaster County residents compare plans from several carriers by phone or video, and it costs you nothing.

Changing plans for 2027: October 15 through December 7

That's the Annual Enrollment window, and new coverage starts January 1, 2027. When your Annual Notice of Change shows up, check two things first: whether your hospital is still in network and whether your drug costs went up. If neither changed for the worse, you may be fine where you are.

What sets Lancaster County apart

Indian Land looks north for care. Many Indian Land and Sun City residents see doctors in Ballantyne, Pineville, or elsewhere in the Charlotte area. Medicare Advantage plans sold in Lancaster County are built around South Carolina service areas, and North Carolina providers may or may not be included. That has to be checked doctor by doctor.

The hospital in Lancaster is part of MUSC. The former Springs Memorial is now MUSC Health Lancaster Medical Center. If you rely on it, your plan's relationship with MUSC matters, including during contract disputes. Read what Lancaster-area Healthspring members should know about MUSC.

A lot of recent arrivals. If you moved to Indian Land from North Carolina or another state with a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan, that plan likely doesn't cover you here. A move opens a special enrollment period, and it has a deadline.

Two very different ends of the county. A plan that works for someone in Sun City may be a poor fit for someone in Kershaw who gets care closer to home or in Columbia. We look at where you live and where you actually go for care.

An agency that compares, not one that sells one brand

If you call one insurer, you'll hear about that insurer's plans. We work with several carriers, so we can lay Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and Part D options side by side for you. The premium is the same as enrolling directly.

Common reasons Lancaster County residents call us

→ Finding a plan that covers Charlotte-area doctors, or confirming one doesn't

→ Checking MUSC Health Lancaster and the specialists you see there

→ Getting into a South Carolina plan after moving from out of state

→ Deciding whether a Medicare Supplement makes more sense when you use doctors in two states

→ Seeing whether you qualify for help with premiums or drug costs

Four mistakes we see in Lancaster County

1. Assuming a Ballantyne doctor is covered. Being 15 minutes away doesn't put a provider in a South Carolina plan's network.

2. Keeping a North Carolina plan after the move. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are tied to where you live, not where you used to.

3. Choosing the same plan as your neighbor. In a community like Sun City, it's natural to compare notes. Your doctors and prescriptions are what should decide it.

4. Passing on a supplement when you first get Part B. That first six-month window is the only time South Carolina supplement companies must take you regardless of health. If you just moved here from an out-of-state Medicare Advantage plan, ask us whether you have a short guaranteed issue right.

How a conversation with us goes

We'll ask where you see doctors, in Lancaster County and across the line, plus your prescriptions, your pharmacy, and any retiree or military coverage. Then we'll walk you through the 2027 plans that fit and what each would likely cost you. All of it happens by phone or video.

Frequently Asked Questions: Medicare in Lancaster, SC

What does an independent Medicare agent do for Lancaster County residents? We compare Lancaster County plans from several insurers against your doctors and prescriptions, handle the enrollment, and help afterward with claims, network changes, and your review each fall.

Is there any charge? No. We're paid by the insurance companies, and you'll pay the same premium you would without an agent.

When can I switch plans for 2027? Annual Enrollment runs October 15 through December 7, 2026, and changes take effect January 1, 2027. Medicare Advantage members also have a one-time change available January 1 to March 31.

Can I see Charlotte doctors with a Lancaster County Medicare plan? Some plans include certain Charlotte-area providers and many don't. We check each doctor you use. Original Medicare with a supplement works with any provider in either state that accepts Medicare.

I moved to Sun City Carolina Lakes. Do I need to change my Medicare plan? If you have Medicare Advantage or a Part D plan from another state, you'll most likely need a South Carolina plan. Your move gives you a special enrollment window. A Medicare Supplement usually moves with you.

Do Lancaster plans cover MUSC Health Lancaster Medical Center? Many do, but networks vary and contracts can change. We confirm your hospital and doctors before recommending a plan.

Should I pick Medicare Advantage or a Medicare Supplement? If your doctors are all in one plan's network, Medicare Advantage may cost less each month. If you see doctors in both states or travel often, a supplement gives you more freedom for a higher premium.

Will my supplement premium change after moving from North Carolina? It can. Supplement prices are based on where you live, so you'll move to South Carolina rates, which may be higher or lower than what you paid before.

I'm a veteran or military retiree. How does Medicare fit with my benefits? TRICARE For Life only works if you keep Part A and Part B. VA care and Medicare don't coordinate, so many veterans keep Medicare for care outside the VA.

I'm still working at 65. Do I have to enroll in Part B? You may be able to wait if you have coverage through your own or your spouse's current employer. Employer size changes the rules, so check before you turn 65.

Can I move from Medicare Advantage to a supplement later on? You can apply, but after your first six months on Part B, South Carolina supplement companies can ask health questions and decline you. Get approved before canceling your current plan.

Do you meet with clients in person in Lancaster County? We work with most Lancaster County clients by phone or video. It's quick, and we can look at plans together on screen. Call to set a time.

What parts of Lancaster County do you serve? All of it, including Indian Land, Sun City Carolina Lakes, Lancaster, Kershaw, Heath Springs, and Van Wyck, plus nearby Fort Mill, Rock Hill, and Chester.
