Aiken has a way of pulling people in. Some came for a career at the Savannah River Site and stayed. Others retired here from somewhere else because of the horses, the golf, the downtown, or the slower pace. Either way, when it's time to choose a Medicare plan, Aiken has one complication most of the state doesn't: a lot of your health care may be across the river in Georgia.
Mauldin Insurance Group is an independent Medicare agency based in Lexington, SC. We help Aiken County residents compare plans from multiple carriers side by side, by phone and video, at no cost to you.
Annual Enrollment runs October 15 through December 7
Whatever you pick takes effect January 1, 2027. Your Annual Notice of Change lists what's different next year, like premiums, networks, and drug tiers. Compare before December 7, and if your current plan still makes sense, we'll tell you to keep it.
What makes Medicare different in Aiken
Your doctors may be in two states. Aiken Regional Medical Centers handles a lot of local care, but many Aiken County residents see specialists or go to the hospital in Augusta. Medicare Advantage plans are approved county by county, and an Aiken County plan may not include the Augusta hospital or specialist you'd actually use. We check every provider on both sides of the Savannah River before recommending anything.
Savannah River Site retirees have layered benefits. Many SRS retirees have retiree health coverage from a contractor, and some have federal benefits as well. How that coverage works with Medicare depends on the plan, and making a change without checking can cost you coverage you can't get back. See retiring from the Savannah River Site: the Medicare piece.
A big military and veteran community. With Fort Eisenhower and the VA medical center in Augusta nearby, the CSRA has a large population of military retirees and veterans. TRICARE For Life requires Medicare Part A and Part B, and VA care doesn't coordinate with Medicare, so many veterans keep both.
Plenty of people moved here to retire. If you moved to Aiken with a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan from another state, it likely doesn't work here. Moving gives you a special enrollment window to choose a new one.
The difference an independent agent makes
Insurance company call centers and captive agents are limited to one company's lineup. We're not. We compare Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and Part D plans from several carriers so you can see your real choices, and your premium comes out the same as if you enrolled directly.
What we help Aiken residents sort out
→ Whether your Aiken and Augusta doctors and hospitals are in the same plan's network
→ How SRS contractor retiree coverage or federal benefits fit with Medicare
→ TRICARE For Life and VA benefits alongside Medicare
→ Medicare Advantage vs. Medicare Supplement when you get care in two states
→ Picking a plan that works here after relocating to the CSRA
→ What your medications will cost under each plan
Four mistakes we see in Aiken County
1. Assuming Augusta providers are covered. A plan can cover your Aiken doctors and leave out the Augusta hospital where you'd actually be admitted.
2. Changing plans without checking SRS retiree benefits. Some retiree coverage can't be picked back up once you drop it.
3. Skipping Part B with TRICARE. TRICARE For Life only works if you have Part B. Without it, you lose that coverage and may face a late enrollment penalty.
4. Missing the Medigap window. The best time to get a Medicare Supplement is your first six months on Part B, when no company can turn you down for health reasons. After that, insurers in South Carolina can ask medical questions, which makes a later switch harder.
How we work with Aiken clients
Tell us who your doctors are on both sides of the river, what you take, where you fill it, and what retiree, TRICARE, or VA coverage you have. We'll narrow the field to the plans that fit and explain the trade-offs without jargon. Phone or video, at your pace.
Frequently Asked Questions: Medicare in Aiken, SC
What does an independent Medicare agent in Aiken do? We do the comparison work. That means pulling plans from several companies, checking them against your doctors on both sides of the river and your prescriptions, getting you enrolled, and helping with claims and yearly reviews after that.
How much does it cost to work with you? It's free to you. Agents are paid by the insurance companies, and you'd pay the same premium without us.
When can I change my Medicare plan for 2027? The 2027 Annual Enrollment window is October 15 through December 7, 2026, and changes kick in January 1. There's also a January 1 to March 31 window when Medicare Advantage members can make one change.
Can I see Augusta doctors with a Medicare plan from Aiken County? It depends on the plan. Some Aiken County Medicare Advantage plans include Augusta providers and some don't. Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement works with any provider in the country that accepts Medicare, including in Georgia.
Is Medicare Advantage or a Medicare Supplement better in Aiken? If your care is mostly local and your doctors are in a plan's network, Medicare Advantage can work well and often has a low premium. If you rely on Augusta specialists or travel often, a Medicare Supplement gives you more freedom at a higher monthly cost.
I retired from the Savannah River Site. How does my retiree coverage work with Medicare? It depends on your contractor and the retiree plan you have. Some plans require you to enroll in Medicare and then pay secondary. Before changing anything, check how a new Medicare plan affects your retiree benefits, because some can't be restored.
Do military retirees in Aiken need Medicare Part B? Yes. To keep TRICARE For Life after 65, you need both Part A and Part B. TRICARE For Life then pays after Medicare.
I'm a veteran. Should I still enroll in Medicare? Many veterans do. VA care and Medicare don't coordinate, so Medicare covers you at non-VA hospitals and doctors. Delaying Part B can also mean a lifelong penalty if you decide to enroll later.
I just moved to Aiken. Do I need a new Medicare plan? If you have Medicare Advantage or a Part D plan from another state, you'll usually need a new one that serves Aiken County. Your move gives you a special window to choose. A Medicare Supplement generally moves with you.
I'm still working at 65. Do I need to sign up for Medicare? It depends on the job. Active coverage through your employer or your spouse's can let you put off Part B without a penalty, but the rules change with employer size. A short call before your birthday can save you a lifelong penalty.
Can I switch from Medicare Advantage to a Medicare Supplement later? Sometimes. Once your first six months on Part B have passed, supplement companies here can underwrite you and say no. Apply and get approved first, then drop the Medicare Advantage plan.
Do you meet in person in Aiken? Aiken County clients usually meet with us by phone or video. We share our screen, walk through the plans, and answer questions as we go. Call and we'll set a time.
What areas around Aiken do you serve? All of Aiken County, including Aiken, North Augusta, Graniteville, Warrenville, Wagener, New Ellenton, and Jackson, plus Edgefield, Barnwell, and the rest of the CSRA on the South Carolina side.
