South Carolina has one of the most active boating cultures in the Southeast — and Lake Murray, right here in Lexington County, is one of the largest and most popular recreational lakes in the entire eastern United States. With over 650 miles of shoreline and tens of thousands of registered watercraft, it's a boating paradise.

It's also a place where the financial consequences of an uninsured or underinsured boating incident can be severe. A collision on the water, a theft from your marina slip, a passenger injury, or a sinking event — all of these can produce losses that far exceed what most boat owners expect.

Here's what SC boaters need to know about boat insurance — including what it covers, what it doesn't, and what Lake Murray specifically demands.

Is Boat Insurance Required in South Carolina?

South Carolina does not legally require boat insurance the way it requires auto insurance. However:

  • Most marinas require proof of liability insurance before they'll allow you to rent or maintain a slip
  • If your boat is financed, your lender almost certainly requires physical damage coverage
  • Operating a watercraft without liability coverage exposes you personally to the full cost of any accident you cause

'Not required' and 'not needed' are two very different things. On a busy weekend on Lake Murray, where boat traffic is dense and recreational use is intense, the liability exposure from an at-fault collision can be substantial.

What Does a Standard Boat Insurance Policy Cover?

Physical Damage to the Boat

Covers your vessel, motor, and standard equipment against damage from:

  • Collision with another vessel, a dock, or an underwater object
  • Fire, lightning, or explosion
  • Theft — of the entire vessel or of equipment on the boat
  • Storm damage, including hail, wind, and flooding
  • Sinking and submersion
  • Vandalism

Most policies offer two valuation options: Agreed Value (the policy pays the stated amount in a total loss, with no depreciation) and Actual Cash Value (pays depreciated value). Agreed Value is the preferred option for vessels that hold their value well.

Liability Coverage

Covers you if your boat causes bodily injury or property damage to another person. If you hit another vessel, injure a swimmer, or damage a dock, your liability coverage pays for:

  • Medical expenses for injured parties
  • Property damage to other boats, docks, and structures
  • Legal defense costs and judgments if you're sued

Standard liability limits start at $100,000 but many Lake Murray boaters — especially those with larger, faster vessels — benefit from carrying $300,000 to $500,000 in liability coverage. Umbrella policies can extend this further.

Medical Payments Coverage

Pays medical expenses for you, your family, and your passengers regardless of fault. This is especially important since passengers on your vessel are not covered under your auto medical payments coverage and may not be covered under your health insurance for boating accidents depending on their policy.

Uninsured/Underinsured Boater Coverage

If an uninsured or underinsured boater hits you and causes injuries or damage, this coverage pays when their liability insurance is insufficient. Given that boat insurance isn't legally required in SC, operating without this protection is a real risk.

Towing and Assistance

On-water towing and emergency assistance coverage pays for boat towing if you break down on the water. On Lake Murray, a tow from the middle of the lake to a marina can cost $300-$800 without coverage.

What Boat Insurance Typically Does NOT Cover

  • Normal wear and tear and maintenance issues — boat insurance is for sudden, accidental events
  • Mechanical breakdown — engine failure from normal use is not a covered loss
  • Manufacturer defects
  • Racing or competitive events unless specifically endorsed
  • Personal belongings on the boat (cameras, phones, coolers) — these may require a scheduled endorsement
  • Use outside geographic limits — some policies restrict coverage to specific bodies of water or geographic areas

Lake Murray Tip

Always confirm your policy's geographic coverage territory. Some boat policies restrict coverage to 'inland waters' only, or have specific exclusions. Make sure your Lake Murray and Saluda River activities are explicitly within your policy's coverage area.

Special Considerations for Lake Murray Boaters

Higher Traffic = Higher Liability Exposure

Lake Murray is among the most heavily trafficked recreational lakes in the Southeast on summer weekends. The combination of pontoon boats, ski boats, jet skis, sailboats, and fishing vessels creates accident scenarios that higher-traffic environments are statistically more prone to. Carrying adequate liability coverage is especially important here.

Jet Ski and PWC Coverage

Personal watercraft (jet skis, WaveRunners, Sea-Doos) are among the most common sources of boating injury claims on SC lakes. Some boat policies extend to cover PWC; others require a separate watercraft policy. If you own a jet ski alongside a boat, confirm both are properly covered — don't assume the boat policy extends automatically.

Pontoon Boats

Pontoon boats are South Carolina's most popular family watercraft. They're relatively slow, stable, and family-friendly — but they're also frequently carrying multiple passengers whose medical payments exposure can be significant. Pontoon boat insurance typically runs $200-$600/year depending on value and coverage levels.

Dock and Lift Coverage

Your homeowners policy may include some dock coverage, but private docks and boat lifts often have sub-limits or exclusions that leave you with a coverage gap. A boat slip worth $50,000, a lift worth $15,000, and a covered dock structure can represent $65,000+ in assets that need to be explicitly covered somewhere in your insurance program.

How Much Does Boat Insurance Cost in SC?

Rates vary based on vessel type, length, engine size, age, value, and coverage levels. General ranges for South Carolina:

  • Small fishing boat or bass boat (under $20,000 value): $150-$350/year
  • Ski boat or deck boat ($30,000-$60,000 value): $350-$750/year
  • Pontoon boat ($40,000-$80,000 value): $400-$900/year
  • Jet ski / PWC: $200-$500/year
  • Larger cabin cruiser or higher-value vessel: $800-$2,000+/year

As with all insurance, shopping multiple carriers produces the best result. Bundling your boat insurance with your home and auto policies often yields a meaningful discount.

Whether you're launching at Dreher Island, mooring in a private slip, or cruising the full length of Lake Murray, the right boat insurance makes the time on the water more enjoyable — because you're not carrying the financial risk of an uninsured accident.
