Medicare Supplement Plans in South Carolina

Get the Coverage You Deserve with Confidence

Navigating Medicare can feel overwhelming—especially when you’re trying to fill in the “gaps” that Original Medicare doesn’t cover. That’s where Medicare Supplement Insurance, also known as Medigap, comes in. At Mauldin Insurance Group, we help South Carolinians choose the right Medigap plan to enhance their Medicare coverage and protect their finances.

Whether you live in Columbia, Lexington, Charleston, or anywhere in the Palmetto State, this guide will walk you through your options for Medicare Supplement plans and help you make a smart, confident decision.

What Are Medicare Supplement Plans?

Medicare Supplement plans are sold by private insurance companies and are designed to work with Original Medicare (Part A and Part B). These plans help pay for out-of-pocket expenses like:

  • Deductibles
  • Copayments
  • Coinsurance
  • Emergency care while traveling abroad

They do not cover things like dental, vision, hearing aids, or prescription drugs (you’ll need a separate Part D plan for that). But when it comes to minimizing your share of medical costs, Medigap can provide peace of mind.

When Should You Enroll?

Your best time to enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which begins the first month you're 65 and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this window, insurance companies can’t deny you coverage or charge more because of your health history.

If you miss this window, you can still apply later, but you may be subject to underwriting.

Available Medicare Supplement Plan Options in South Carolina

The federal government standardizes Medigap plans across states (except in MA, MN, and WI), which means Plan G in South Carolina offers the same core benefits as Plan G in any other state. However, premiums can vary significantly between carriers and zip codes.

Here’s how some of the most popular Medigap plans compare in terms of coverage:

Plan G:

Plan G is one of the most popular options in South Carolina. It covers everything Original Medicare doesn’t, except the Medicare Part B deductible (which is $240 in 2025). After that, you’re generally covered at 100%. Great for people who want predictable costs and extensive coverage.

Plan N:

Plan N offers slightly lower premiums than Plan G but requires you to pay a small copay for doctor visits (up to $20) and emergency room visits (up to $50). It doesn’t cover the Part B deductible or excess charges. It’s a solid pick for those in good health who don’t visit the doctor often.

High-Deductible Plan G:

This version of Plan G offers the same benefits as regular Plan G but with a lower monthly premium and a high annual deductible (over $2,800 in 2025). Once you hit that deductible, the plan kicks in. This is a good fit if you’re healthy and want to keep your monthly costs low.

Plan F (Only Available if You Were Eligible Before 2020):

If you became eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020, you may still purchase Plan F. It’s the most comprehensive plan available, covering both the Part A and Part B deductibles, as well as all copays and coinsurance. Because of this, Plan F premiums tend to be higher.

What Do Medicare Supplement Plans Not Cover?

No Medigap plan will cover:

  • Long-term care (nursing homes or assisted living)
  • Vision and dental care
  • Hearing aids
  • Private-duty nursing
  • Prescription drug coverage (you’ll need a Part D plan for that)

To cover these gaps, we recommend bundling your Medigap plan with a stand-alone dental, vision, and hearing (DVH) policy, and a Medicare Part D plan.

How to Choose the Right Plan

There’s no one-size-fits-all plan. Your best choice depends on:

  • Your health and how often you see doctors
  • Whether your providers accept Medicare Assignment (important for Plan N)
  • Your budget and risk tolerance
  • Your lifestyle, especially if you travel frequently

A retiree in Charleston might choose Plan G for comprehensive coverage, while a healthier couple in Lexington may find Plan N more affordable and just as effective for their needs.
